Calvary Episcopal Church in Summit, NJ to host

Opening it’s doors to the community is not new to Calvary Episcopal Church, in the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy their members cooked and served over 6,700 hot meals over 13 days for anyone in need.
This spirit of hospitality continues as Calvary invites the entire city of Summit and its surrounding communities to participate in a new initiative called a “Sacred Space for Summit” through special events of Music, Art, Performances, and Worship.
The Reverend Canon Matthew Corkern, Rector of Calvary Church, explains the importance of this new initiative, “Calvary Church is a community of faith in the heart of Summit. In the tradition of urban and suburban churches, we seek to be a Sacred Space, bringing the heart of Christ into the heart of the city, by offering a broad array of spiritual, educational, artistic, civic engagement, and service opportunities to the greater community.”
Corkern continued, “We welcome all without regard to religious affiliation. By opening our doors and sharing our facilities, gifts, talents, time and faith, Calvary Church is a place where Summit’s citizens and visitors can deepen their faith and benefit from human knowledge, talent, and compassion in ways that honor God.”
Inaugural Event to Feature Pipes of Christmas Stars
The inaugural Sacred Space event will be a Celtic Vespers service on Saturday, September 28 at 7: 00 pm.  The service will feature music performed by stars of the popular Celtic concert, the Pipes of Christmas.

Through music and readings, the service is drawn from the ancient Celtic tradition that invites the participant to rediscover the mystery of God’s image within – the wisdom, strength, beauty, creativity, eternity, and presence of the divine within the human.
Featured performers in the service will be Scottish fiddle champion Calum Pasqua, uilleann piper Christopher Layer, “Jersey Boys” guitarist Steve Gibb and organist William Peek.  The quartet will perform music inspired from the Pipes of Christmas concerts.
The service is offered to the public free of charge. A free will offering will be collected to help defray costs and fund future programs.
Calvary Church welcomes suggestions and applications for future programs. Please contact Sacred Space for Summit coordinator, Robert Currie at (908) 273-3509 or via email at[email protected].

Blessing of the Animals to be Held on September 29 – All Welcome
On Sunday, September 29 at 10:30 am, Calvary will celebrate the legacy of St. Francis of Assisi by having a special liturgical service of “The Blessing of the Animals.”  No matter one’s religious affiliation, people and pets from around Summit are invited to this “Sacred Space” event.
Blessing of the Animals
ALL pets (leashed or caged) and their people are asked to gather in the Sanctuary for a special procession that will be orchestrated by our Master of Animals, Peter Huntley- Robertson. So, rain or shine, all animals will have their special day!
After the service, all are welcome to share refreshments following the dedication of the Creation Garden.
For more information on these events or other Calvary happenings, please visit www.calvarysummit.org or phone the church at (908) 277-1814. Calvary Episcopal Church is located at 31 Woodland Avenue in Summit.
About Calvary Episcopal Church
Summit’s oldest house of worship, Calvary Church welcomes all people, no matter where they are in their spiritual and personal journeys. Calvary provides experiences for those secure in their faith, those who doubt, and those who search to know the Christ better from differing perspectives. We commit ourselves in love and joy to the belief that at our Lord’s Table there is a place for every individual to be received and in turn to receive others. We believe strongly that God and faith matter as we understand ourselves as agents and ambassadors of Jesus’ ministry of hospitality and hope.
